Igor’s uppercase form look pretty good to me, but I don’t recall ever seeing the saltillo aligned to the x-height like that. Here are the Brill forms, including smallcap:5 -

As I recall, short descender versions of Stempel Garamond were available for Linotype setting (which this is, note characteristic non-kerning f).2 -

FYI, I have seen some fonts in which ID6 is not derived from ID1+ID2, and so far as I am aware these work fine, e.g. Foobar Semibold ID1 = Foobar Semibold ID2 = Regular ID4 = Foobar Semibold ID6 = Fo…4 -

The thread title is misleading. The discussion is indeed about the saltillo (note spelling), so properly Mesoamerican, not South American.1
